The Great Kilt

This garment goes by many names: Great Kilt, Feileadh Mor, Breacan Feile, Big Kilt, Belted Plaid.

Essentially, it is just a length of double-width tartan. The length can vary from 4.5 to 9 yards, but 6 or 7 yards is the most popular choice. The Great Kilt shown here is 7 yards.

Light or Medium Weight tartans are best for the Great Kilt.

This style of kilt has to be pleated by hand each time you put it on. How to wrap a Great Kilt.

Delivery time is usually 4-6 weeks

Spread out the full length of the tartan.

Leaving an arm's length unpleated, begin making your pleats by hand & continue to an arm's length from the other end.

Unpleated on each end

Fold the unpleated sides in a bit to slide your belt under.

Lay down on top. Fold the right unpleated end over the front of the body, then the left. Fasten your belt & stand up.

Now comes the fun & creative part. Half of the tartan will be hanging down over the belt. Just start playing with the tartan to fashion a variety of looks on the upper body.
