Chapes
These chape brooch designs derive from the Pictish treasure found on St. Ninian's, Shetland - a beautiful hoard of silver bowls, pins, brooches & chapes. The chapes date from the late 8th century & the ornately engraved one has a remarkably similar parallel in a clay mould found on the Brough of Birsay in Orkney. The two porpoise-like heads had significance in Pictish folklore, perhaps as two sea gods or as a representation of the good & evil sides of man's character.
Each piece is beautifully gift boxed.
